Riven Zhang is the person that brought WeChat Pay and Alipay to Canada. He also did the first Alipay transaction in Canada and the first WeChat Pay transaction in North America! Both transactions took place at Motion Pay’s first ever client, the Birks jewelry store in Ottawa. The entrepreneurial story of the 2017 Ottawa Immigrant Entrepreneur Award recipient is worth telling.

Motion Pay is not Riven’s first company. In 2000, Riven immigrated to Canada from Beijing, China. After just a few months in his adoptive country, he launched ComefromChina.com(CFC), a media and interactive on-line platform dedicated to connect Canadian Chinese for business and for social interactions. His long success with CFC got him to travel back to China many times. But on his early 2015 trip, it became obvious that mobile technology had taken China by storm and that it started a commercial and social revolution. Simply put, everybody was paying with their mobile phones, and cash had virtually disappeared! It took nothing more for him to convince the two giants Tencent and Alibaba to release the first ever Canadian licenses for WeChat Pay and Alipay. But that was the easy part.

In fact, it took the whole year 2016 to put together all that was needed for QR code mobile payment technology in Canada: the smart payment device, the software, the security, the regulations, the agreements, the application forms, the business offer, etc., most things that were non-existent at the time in the Canadian market. Today, with Shen Shen, his long time friend and company co-founder, he appreciates Motion Pay’s success. However, Riven’s vision is yet to be accomplished as he wishes to bring QR code mobile payments to all Canadian businesses and empower them to seize many more sales opportunities with cross-border payment acceptance.
